North West Surrey is a highly urbanised area in the Thames Valley, which has been extensively worked for sand & gravel leaving a variable legacy: On the positive side, parts are now designated Special Protection Area (SPA) & RAMSAR complex under the SW London Reservoirs & Gravel Pits wetlands of international importance for wintering waterfowl (specifically Gadwall Anas strepera and Shoveler Anas clypeata), as well as award winning restorations to agriculture and recreational after-uses. Meanwhile, a legacy of underused or neglected land has also developed arising from a decline in and fragmentation of agriculture.
The proposal for the masterplan is to take a landscape/multi site scale approach and develop a visionary, multi functional restoration strategy for the area, which aims to:
-Support and reinforce the SPA/RAMSAR designation
-Ensure compatibility and safety in relation to good habitat design and birdstrike risk from Heathrow Airport
-Identify opportunities for local flood alleviation
-Promote appropriate access and recreation provision
-Enhance the visual landscape
The principle output will be a Strategy Document detailing the landscape scale “Vision” for the area. This will set the framework and inspiration for subsequent implementation of the proposals locally.
